fric•tion

/’frikSH(e)n/

noun

     the resistance that one surface or object encounters when moving over another. "a lubrication system that reduces friction"

When designing your machine, you always strive to ensure the components you choose have the best balance of cost and longevity. That longevity is extended when scheduled maintenance events are performed by the end user, on time. Not following the maintenance procedures can, and often times, results in premature component failure, increasing the machine total cost of ownership.

Lubrication is the number one way engineers ensure the longevity of components. It is such a large part of our consideration, it has its own discipline – Tribology. Reducing friction with lubrication results in better efficiency as well as decreased heat generation, that ultimately increases life.

Apex Dynamics’ new Smart Lubrication System is designed to increase the longevity of critical moving components. The system is comprised of a pump, connectors, distribution blocks, tubing, and grease or oil that delivers lubrication to components on the machine form a centralized location.

At the heart of the system is the pump. The system is aptly named Smart, because the action of the pump is fully programmable. With each pulse, the pump actuates, pushing a metered volume of lubricant to the critical components. The pump can be programmed through a handset, which is removed, and the pump actuates according to the program as long as it is powered. The pump can alternatively, be controlled by the machine’s PLC.

Lower cost system provide a constant pressure/flow rate via spring loaded reservoirs. The advantage of the smart lubrication system is the efficient use of lubricant. Neither under-lubricating or over-lubricating, the smart system conserves lubricant usage, lowering operation costs and preventing environmental / safety concerns resulting from over-lubrication.

The grease version of the pump is available with one or two pumps, and up to four outlet ports. With the addition of progressive distribution blocks, one system can lubricate up to 56 positions.

The oil version is available with up to 5 pumps 10 outlets for a maximum of 40 lubrication positions.

The volumetric capacity for the grease and oil pumps are 400 cc and 2000 cc, respectively. The pump is also equipped with a reed switch, which can send an indication to the machine operator to replace the lubricant cartridge.

Components that can be lubricated include;

  • bearings (linear and rotary),
  • ball screws, and
  • open gearing
  • rack and pinion

Open cell polyurethane foam pinions are available to match Apex Dynamics Rack and Pinion in module sizes 1-12. The PU pinions are offered in straight cut and helical right hand and left hand versions with mounting shafts to suit your needs.
